30 Minute Animal Presentation

Like the title suggest, these program last 30 minutes and include a visit with one of our education ambassadors. One of our educators will discuss the animal’s natural history and interesting behaviors that it uses to survive in the wild. These programs are for audiences of all ages.

Animal Tales

Students of all ages can come read to our adoptable cats! This program helps build reading fluency and confidence while socializing our homeless cats.

Animals of the Night

Do you ever wonder what animals are on the prowl outdoors when you are asleep?  Do you know why your pets (like cats & hamsters) sometimes act differently at night?  This program answers questions like these and others like it.  This program lasts approximately 50 minutes and is suggested for students from 1st to 6th grade.

Basic Pet Care

Do you know the three things every person should have before adopting a pet? Do you want to learn what it takes to own and care for a companion animal? This class will introduce you to the things you need to care for your pet. This program is offered at no cost and lasts approximately 30 minutes. The suggested audience for this program is children from 4 to 9 years of age. This program does not include an animal guest.

Build a Better World

We share planet Earth with thousands of different organisms. From microbes to raccoons, everything plays a role in keeping the world healthy.This program will show you how the animals in Pennsylvania are making the world a better place, as well as what we can do to make sure we protect it for future generations. This program is designed for the Library Summer Reading Theme for 2017!

Career Day Visits

Short talk about animal welfare careers as part of your school’s scheduled “Career Day”; these visits are offered at no cost. Talks do not include a live animal.

Circles of Life

All living things big and small, go through various stages of life. Plants start as tiny seeds and frogs are swimming tadpoles before they can survive on land. Learn how organisms develop and mature over the course of their life cycle, and what it takes for a species to keep their population thriving.

Deep in the Meadow

(In collaboration with Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy)

Take a journey with us deep into the meadow! Meadows are large, grassy fields that often have a beautiful array of flowers and an abundance of life teeming in them. In this program you will learn all about the critters that inhabit Pennsylvania’s meadows, from the tiniest pollinators to the stealthiest hawks. These stunning landscapes are vital parts of Pennsylvania’s ecosystem and should be handled and explored with care. This program correlates with Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy’s Habitat Explorers program.

Digging it!  A look at nature’s diggers.

Western Pennsylvania is home to a number of animals that dig in order to find food or shelter.  In this program you’ll meet some of these fun animals and learn about what they like to do best: dig!  This program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suggested for students from 1st to 3rd grade.

Every Hero Has A Story: Wild Heroes Have Wild Stories

Do you have a favorite animal?  Do you have a favorite super hero?  What about a favorite animal super hero?  In this program you will learn about the special powers some wild animals have right here in Western PA.  This program will introduce you to some amazingly fast feathered friends, a sharp eyed critter, and a small mammal with fantastic feeling abilities.  This program lasts approximately 50 minutes and is suggested for students from Kindergarten to 5th grade.

Feathered Friends

Feathers serve many purposes for our flying friends. Some are used for waterproofing, while others are used for protection. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures! Learn all about native Pennsylvania birds from raptors to corvids, and the importance of their characteristic coat. Feathered Friends lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suggested for students first through fifth grade.

On your mark, get set, SWIM!

This program highlights Pennsylvania’s native aquatic species, and explores the science behind the adaptations that make them suitable for water living. From playful otters to carefree turtles, each species moves in its own unique way through the rivers and lakes of Pennsylvania. This program is suggested for children ages Pre-K through sixth grade and lasts 45-60 minutes.

Perch like a Peregrine…and more!

Some animals slither on the ground while others soar through the clouds.  Learn about the different ways animals get around and show your peers what it would be like if you were to act like an animal. This is a 30 minute program for up to 25 children ages 4-6.

Regal Raptors

Do you know what makes a raptor different than a songbird?  This class will examine the different species of birds of prey we see in Pennsylvania.  This program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suggested for students from 1st to 5th grade.

Shells and Scales

Did you know some species of reptile can live to be over 100 years old? Or that a turtle’s spine is connected to its shell? It’s true! Pennsylvania is home to many of these species of scaled and shelled friends. This program teaches all about different reptiles, where they live, and what makes them so unique. The program lasts approximately 50 minutes and is suggested for students first through fifth grade.

Spring Time is Baby Time

Learn why most baby animals are born in the spring.  Springtime is a busy time of year for our Wildlife Center, in this program you will learn about the many babies that we care for every spring. This program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suggested for students from 1st to 5th grade.

Tucked in for Winter

Did you ever wonder what animals do when it gets cold outside? A snake would look pretty silly in a coat, and they certainly don’t make boots big enough for bears. So how DO animals survive winter? This program teaches all about how native Pennsylvania animals make it through the cold months.

Wildlife Rainbow: Untamed Colors and Patterns

Wild animals use colors and patterns to communicate with each other and to hide from danger.  Learn how animals use the color wheel to their advantage.  This is a 30 minute program for children ages 4-6.

Wildlife Rehab 101: What would you do?

Learn what it takes to work with sick, injured, or orphaned native PA wildlife.  Chose a treatment plan for animals with similar injuries to those our Wildlife Center sees daily.  This program lasts approximately 50 minutes and is suggested for students from 3rd to 8th grade.

Wild Science
