Animal Tales is a volunteer reading program for school-aged children that focuses on literacy and shelter enrichment. Children sit and read to the animals in our shelter, which not only helps to build confidence and fluency in the child’s reading but it also helps to socialize the animals in our care.
In order to attend any of the reading sessions, students must attend an orientation session. At this session, we will review the program, how to navigate our Shelter, and most importantly, how to understand dog, cat and rabbit behavior. We will review additional enrichment opportunities, and how to alter your body language to make the animals more comfortable.
Children can attend the orientation session alone if they are capable of reading independently. If you are planning on attending the reading sessions with your reader, please plan on attending the orientation session with them.
