Day 1: The Cognitive Canine: In the last decade, science has taken incredible strides in our understanding of canine cognition. This combination lecture/workshop addresses these advances and applies them to a variety of exercises including imitation, reading, fast mapping, match-to-sample, object discrimination, color discrimination, and more.

Day 2: Positive Solutions for Behavior Problems: Apply the principles of behavior and learning to resolve problem behaviors without the use of force. It’s easier than you think!

Day 3: Shelter from the Storm: More and more forward thinking shelters and rescue groups are recognizing the role that behavior plays in the pet overpopulation equation, and adding behavior programs and even departments. This can be the most frustrating and yet rewarding work you’ve ever done. Hear about what – and how – behavior programs are working in shelters. Learn how to approach shelter administration and staff to improve your chances of having your training and behavior program be accepted and successful. Learn what not to do and say to avoid pushing shelter buttons. Discuss philosophies about euthanasia, hoarders, rescues, and limited admittance (“no-kill”) versus full-service shelters. Share feelings about euthanasia, and your own past experiences in shelter training work.

Each day of the seminar has been approved for 6 continuing education units from the following organizations:

Pat Miller, author of The Power of Positive Dog Training (2001), Positive Perspectives (2003), Positive Perspectives 2 (2008), Play With Your Dog (2008), Do Over Dogs (2010), How to Foster Dogs (2013), and Beware of the Dog (2016), has been training dogs for 40 years in obedience, Rally, and herding.

Miller worked for 20 years at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, California, during which time she collaborated with Trish King to create the country’s first “Color Coding” system for assessing shelter dogs and volunteers. This system was successful in reducing behavior problems in shelter dogs (with a corresponding reduction in euthanasia) by identifying difficult to handle dogs and matching them with more experienced and capable volunteer handlers. This program went hand-in-paw with Marin’s “Good Manners Class,” a weekly class attended by staff and volunteers with shelter dogs.

Miller launched Peaceable Paws, LLC in Monterey/Santa Cruz, and it is currently in operation on 80 acres in Fairplay, Maryland as a dog-friendly training center and horse boarding facility. Pat is Director of the Peaceable Paws Trainer Academies and Training Programs.
