Please Notice: Due to the current shelter capacity, all non-emergency dog surrenders require an appointment. This helps us manage our shelter population efficiently. Please schedule appointments for surrender by viewing the information on this page. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in ensuring the well-being of our furry friends. Thank you!

We understand that making the decision to give up your pet can be very difficult. Before you make the final decision, please check out some of our resources that may allow you to keep your pet or provide alternative re-homing options.

In order to ensure resources are prepared and available when the pet enters our care, the Humane Animal Rescue requires a surrender appointment to be scheduled. Without an appointment process, we would have no control over the number of pets that come into our care each day which in turn would limit our ability to provide the best care to each pet. You must also provide us with proof of ownership before surrendering.

Step 1. Fill out the appropriate form:

Step 2. Schedule appointment. Call 412-345-0348 and leave a voicemail. One of our knowledgeable staff members will call you back to schedule your appointment. Please notice calls are returned in order of priority. We are closed on Mondays.

Step 3. Gather the necessary paperwork. Collect your pet’s medical history, if available. Please bring these records to your appointment. A valid photo ID will also be required at the time of your appointment.

Step 4. Complete intake forms. Please fill out the appropriate form to help us learn as much as possible about your pet. Please fill the forms out and email to pethelpline@humaneanimalrescue.org or print and bring them with you at the time of your appointment.

Step 5. Arrive for your appointment at your scheduled location: East Side: 6926 Hamilton Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15208 North Side: 1101 Western Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 Your appointment will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. For everyone’s safety, all pets should be either in a carrier or on a collar and leash when entering the building.

Step 6. Next steps. After we’ve gathered information and the animal evaluation is completed, we’ll sit down with you and discuss the best options for you and your pet.
