Dog Obedience Training

To love your dog is to learn with your dog! Obedience classes and programs at Humane Animal Rescue are uniquely designed for all of your dog’s training needs. Our team is comprised of some of the city’s most knowledgeable canine trainers. Our positive, reward-based training methods will help to bring out the best in your dog all while strengthening the human-canine bond!

Basic Obedience

Start with the basics! The basic level courses are the foundation for obedience and help to build a strong bond between you and your dog. Classes will teach the basics of obedience such as sit, down, leave it, loose leash walking, and so much more! Puppy Manners includes off-leash socialization as a part of class! All basic obedience courses meet for one hour, each week, for 7 weeks.

Puppy Manners I

This course is for all puppies ages 8 weeks to 5 months old at the start of the course. In addition to learning basic obedience, your puppy will have the opportunity to play with other puppies and learn crucial social skills. Your trainer will provide you with advice on common puppy behaviors and teach you about dog communication.

Adult Manners I

This course is for all dogs ages 6 months and up. Whether your little puppy has grown up or you have recently adopted an adolescent or adult dog, this course is for you! Learn the basics of obedience and practical everyday skills for living harmoniously with your dog.

Bully Breed Manners I

This course is an exclusive learning experience for you and your beloved bully breed! Your dog will acquire basic obedience skills and good manners. Along with training methods, your instructor will talk about breed traits, owner responsibilities, and public misconceptions.

Intermediate Obedience

Continue training to develop new skills and strengthen skills from the basic level courses. Intermediate level 2 courses turn loose lead walking into heeling, extends stays, strengthens recalls, practices politely greeting strangers, and much more! All intermediate obedience courses meet for one hour, each week, for 6 weeks. Dogs and their owners attend all 6 classes together.

Puppy Manners II

In Puppy Basic Manners II, puppies build on the skills they were taught in level one. Puppies learn to work around distractions and refine their obedience skills to grow up to be well mannered dogs!

Class prerequisite: Puppy Manners I

Adult Manners II

Turn loose leash walking into heeling and add distance and distractions to stays and recalls. In level II dogs refine the skills they learned in level I, taking the next step towards model canine manners.

Bully Breed Manners II

Build on the skills you and your bully learned in level I and become a rock solid team! Turn loose leash walking into heeling and add distance and distractions to stays and recalls. Show the world how wonderful bullies can be, as your dog becomes the superstar of your neighborhood with their well-rounded obedience skills and teamwork with you.

Advanced Obedience

Advanced obedience class and certification prep classes are for students that have completed a basic level and an intermediate level obedience course and want to continue to build on those skills. These classes build your pup’s confidence and prepares them to take CGC or TDI certification tests.

Super Dog

You’ve taken basic manners I & II with your dog and want to continue learning and growing together. In super dog be ready to test and hone your skills as human and dog team. Class becomes more challenging, preparing you and your dog for the unexpected. Dogs build confidence with every new challenge, and so do you! This class is beneficial for those planning to take Canine Good Citizen or Therapy Dog preparation courses.

Therapy Dog Prep

Would you like to share your dog at a nursing home, hospital, or children’s reading program? Therapy Dog Preparation is a fun class where you and your dog practice test exercises and prepare for animal assisted therapy work. You and your dog will work in a group setting with emphasis on the importance of teamwork. In class you will improve your dog handling skills while encountering a variety of scenarios you may encounter while working in the community.

The strengths and preferences of you and your dog will be identified and assessed so that we may offer recommendations for placement in facilities that best ensure safe, enjoyable, and successful animal assisted therapy experiences.

This preparation course does not include TDI testing. Dogs and handler teams ready to test may register for the test separately here.

Class prerequisite: Basic Manners I & II, Super Dog, CGC

Note: Payment is due at time of online registration. If payment is not promptly made, your testing slot will not be held.

Canine Good Citizen Prep

After completing Super Dog, join us in preparing for the Canine Good Citizen test!

In this preparation course, dogs improve on the basic skills they know to ace the 10 test exercises in the Canine Good Citizen test. We will help you to fine tune your communication with your dog to a whole new level.

The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is offered at the end of the course for an additional fee for those individuals ready to test.

Class prerequisite: Basic Manners I & II, Super Dog

Private Tutoring Sessions

A one hour tutoring session is useful if you need a little extra help to raise your dog or brush up on certain skills. Appointments are made based on trainer availability. One-on-one sessions are held at both of our shelter locations. Contact classes@humaneanimalrescue.org to inquire and schedule.

Tutoring sessions do not address: dog to human aggression or bites to humans, dogs, or other animals.
